In 1881, she founded and became the first president of the American Red Cross, a volunteer-led, humanitarian organization.

The most common origin story says she is the daughter of Viracocha (the god of civilization) and Mama Cocha (the sea goddess). Inti (the sun god) is her brother and husband.

The sea and fish goddess in Inca mythology in the Andes region of South America. She is the protectress of sailors and fishermen. In one legend she mothered Inti and Mama Quilla with Viracocha, the Inca supreme god.
The wife of Santa Claus, the North American Christmas gift-bringer. Santa Claus emerged in the 1820s from a number of European folklore traditions, but Mrs. Claus had no such precedent. The first Catholic saint of the Americas. Born in Lima, Peru, Rose devoted her life to charity. She created exquisite lace and embroidery and grew beautiful flowers. After 11 years of self-martyrdom with the Third Order of St. Dominic, she died in 1617, at the age of 31, having prophesied the date of her death exactly. She was beatified in 1667 and canonized in 1671.
In the Hawaiian religion, Pele is the goddess of fire, lightning, wind and volcanoes. She is a popular figure in many stories of ancient Hawai’i known as Hawaiian mythology. Legend has it that she is a fickle and dangerous lover who sometimes kills her husbands. She is believed to live in the Halema’uma’u crater of Kīlauea.
Isis is a goddess in the Ancient Egyptian religion whose worship spread throughout the Greco-Roman world. She was worshipped as the ideal mother and wife as well as the matron of nature and magic. Her brother, Osiris, became her husband. After Osiris was murdered, she awoke him from the dead in order to impregnate herself, and later gave birth to Horus.

A Lemhi Shoshone woman, who accompanied the Lewis and Clark Expedition, acting as an interpreter and guide, in their exploration of the Western United States between 1804 and 1806. She either died in 1812 (historical research) or 1884 (oral tradition). Since 2000, there has been a golden dollar coin minted each year with her image (it’s almost like real money).

Helen Keller – No. 376
Helen Keller is an American author and political activist. She was the first deafblind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree. The story of how Keller’s teacher broke through the isolation and helped her learn to communicate is the basis for the play and film The Miracle Worker. A prolific author, Keller was outspoken in her opposition to war and campaigned for women’s suffrage, workers’ rights and socialism.
